built for real life
The kitchen is the heart of this house. Not in a sentimental way. In a real one. This is where I spend the most time. Where the house meets daily life.
I started with a different idea. Marble with dramatic veining. Beautiful, but not quite me. As I sat with it, I realized I wanted something warmer. Something with weight.
That’s when I found the brown onyx. From there, the kitchen became about how I actually live. Truly custom. Built for movement. For storage. For gathering. I didn’t follow a preset plan. I built what I needed. I worked directly with a cabinet company, a stone fabricator, and my contractor. Patient partners. Thoughtful collaborators. People willing to help me bring a vision to life.
Matte black cabinetry throughout. Clean and modern. Traditional hardware with a sense of wear. A built-in pantry cabinet. Quiet. Strong. A large square island anchoring the room. Storage. Microwave. Wine cooler. Seating that invites people to stay. A wide backsplash where everything lives together. A modern casing hiding the hood. Leaf-and-dart molding tying it back to the house.
This is where I cook with my family. Where my mom and sister stop by. Where recipes are shared. Where flowers from the Friday market get spread out and arranged.
I didn’t set out to design something unconventional. I set out to design something honest. And in doing that, I learned that building for yourself, out of necessity, can be more beautiful than anything prescriptive.
Designing this room taught me to trust my instincts. And to be grateful for the people who helped me shape it.
It’s the boldest room in the house. And the one that feels most like home.
More soon,
