layer by layer
There’s a shift that happened somewhere in the middle of this renovation. At first, it was all about fixing things/reacting to what’s broken, what’s outdated, what’s missing. Then one day, last Sunday, I looked around and realized we’d started to build upward, with the team adding layers of intention and beauty on top of what already exists.
That’s the status update home and emotionally. The floors are down, the baseboards are in, the moldings are up. Doors and casings are being installed. The house is starting to feel like itself again. I am too.
It reminds me of writing, of what it feels like when an idea that once only lived in your mind starts to take form in the world. I’ve written words that became stories, and stories that became a television show. Now, I’m writing through space: with wood and light, with framing and finish. Each decision, from the length of a floorboard to the height of a cabinet frame, is a sentence in the story of this home.
What’s different in this process is that I can see the story rise around me. I can walk through it, touch it. It’s proof that vision, when you trust it, when you fight for it, can move from the abstract to the tangible.
Every layer holds both what was here before and what I’m building now. It’s authorship, still. Just another form of it.
More soon.
